Heartwood
has offered a variety of special programs during the summer months, including summer
arts intensives, children’s festivals and children’s theatre productions.
Heartwood also hosts special programs for other non-profit educational
and arts organizations. The
Governor’s School for the Arts has made field trips to Heartwood for a full
day of arts programs several times since 1995.
The Landmark Studio for the Arts has brought teenagers in its summer
theater program to study at Heartwood. Heartwood
has developed a partnership with Energy Express, a summer school learning and
nutrition program run by the Calhoun County Board of Education with AmeriCorps
workers and volunteers.
Public
and private schools and groups such as the Girl Scouts have either traveled to
Heartwood, or have invited Heartwood faculty members to teach in their
facilities as visiting artists. Additionally,
Heartwood sponsors lectures, films, “sock hops” and teen dances, play
readings, art workshops and dance workshops.
In this way, Heartwood’s positive influence extends beyond its own
students to children throughout West Virginia.
Heartwood
has developed an extensive book, music, and video lending library.
Not only do students and faculty use these cultural resources in
Heartwood programs, but also interested students and teachers from the larger
community frequently borrow these resources.
