Not all classes listed are available each program.

festival-closeupHeartwood Artistic Director Jude Binder will teach a course in Maskmaking for teens, adults and seniors. Jude is well-known throughout West Virginia and beyond for the masks she makes and wears in performances and for the masks that Heartwood students have made for public performances and theatre pieces over the years. Attendees at the Wood Festival this spring had the opportunity to see the beautiful Heartwood masks during a mask parade and Salutation performed for the community in Grantsville.

Mask students will design and create their own tarlatan mask and work with plaster, clay, acrylic paints and other materials in the process. The weekly classes average 2 hours in length. There are 13 weeks in the course, with one week off for Thanksgiving.

Jude has been performing in her masks at "FestivALL - A City Becomes A Work of Art" in Charleston, since 2007. During that time she has become the iconic "FestivALL Princess, appearing at the majority of FestivALL events, gracefully strolling about Charleston greeting young and old alike. Her image as the "FestivALL Princess" is used by "FestivALL" as a welcoming logo. Jude's masks were displayed in Charleston this summer in an exhibit "Masks Unmasked".

Students will design and create their own tarlatan mask and work with plaster, clay, acrylic paints and other materials in the process.

Friday, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Class length will vary. Fee - $85.00 plus $15.00 materials fee. Instructor Jude Binder

If you would like to enroll please call Heartwood for a list of supplies needed for the first class.
